edit: this contest is now under evaluation.

:new: new submissions and prizes!

Edit: new submission!  you all have a little less than one month. a lot of people are doing 'what on earth' but if anyone does 'or she'd drink her coat or stuff it' i'll love you forever, I swear, but feel free to use whichever prompt!

My first surprise is the lamest, but I have a contest for you all (since it isn't form-fitting for my group) !  Due date is July 26th. One submission per person and it would be lovely if you could tell me which one you used. :)

Here's prompts -
:bulletblue: write about your favorite writer (author, poet, whoever writes!)
:bulletred: or she'd drink her coat or stuff it
:bulletblue: shorelines burst onto squeals of water
:bulletred: what on earth

only pick one

All submissions must be poetry. I really hope you decide to enter the contest! Also, feel free to interpret the prompts in any way you want - they may or may not be in the poem word for word, if you want. Of course there will be prizes. (feel free to help me expand them if you want)

VolcanosThe war was inescapable.
Like waves of humid heat,
Like the stench of fetid meat,
Oppression broke over them.
To fight for freedom the warriors went,
But before one left he did profess
His love for the beautiful princess.
She promised to wait, and he promised to return.
Blazes prospered and candle lights perished.
Bloody battle blows
Felled many mighty foes.
So many restless souls, but love persevered.
Her actions betrayed her thoughts.
Lingering on her fears,
She tried to hide her worried tears.
There had been no news.
Their engagement was no secret affair.
A jealous rival reared his head
And told the princess her love was dead.
Her soul could not hold so much pain.
The young warrior returned in a blaze of glory.
This feeling did not last long
Because he found out his love was gone.
She had left to join him, but he remained.
She slept atop a mountain neighboring the sun.
He kissed her where she lay,
Vowing to see her another day.
He left but didn’t go far.

you are floating away in
every direction:
a universe
of sunlight & marrow bones
i want to know
your touch
had vertigo then--
a certain horse sadness
i remember how you
would swallow the stars:
watch them glow through your cheeks
(no one told you
what they thought of light & dying
of being a constellation
drawn across your face)
you are the milky way:
a firefly drowning
but i will trail you--
hold your coat above the water
(a star
exploding a million miles away
with a number for a name)
a what-on-earth girli want to be a what-on-earth girl
with a green plastic watering can,
coffee mugs with famous paintings on them
a typewriter, and maybe a yellow futon
i want to wear sundresses when it rains
and i'd like to be the most beautiful in the morning
but most of all, i want my heart to sit in my mouth
so i can speak words of love to everyone
a what on earth girl...

and I wonder
what on Earth has made it happen—
I’ve been clinging to this
ball of mass until it felt like home,
until my ears stopped ringing,
until I stopped feeling
the grip and grind and gravity
of its surface—
but now I’m peeling
away from it at a thousand miles an hour,
spinning sideways for stellar and
sidereal days,
lost in a haze of ecliptic abstraction
and I can’t even stop
to catch my breath

a colony of dead Vitruvian men.

as shorelines burst onto squeals of water,
each one a hideous screech
from gaping jaws, a cry that echoes
for hours while stars tick-tock overhead.
i could swallow entire mouthfuls
of the pale sun, feel them explode
like lightning strokes in my aching belly
and still think like a deserted seashore -
the only signs of life
ruffled seagulls picking at dry oyster shells.
the earth is a sphere and the coast
is a box of empty prayers
held together by a couple loose ends
of fishing wire
sharp enough to slit throats.

she’d pass him
hunched over the curb
a cigarette between two fingers
lit like a star in his knotted knuckles
it beckoned

the smoke whispered
streaming from parched lips
reminiscent of chains
clanging in the wind yet
silent as frost
and the steamy warmth
of her thermos
like the old coat
bundling her up

still smelling of cloves)

desperation lurking

she unfurled the coat

Daring the hinges to squeak
She would drink her coat or stuff it
Before eating a real feast
Nimble fingers fell through our favourite picnic table's food loving loopy loops
"Count to ten" She dared
"Before swallowing that food"

Melted from our very own judgmental stares
We trained to avoid lying fun house mirrors
"Imagine a body of air-"
She whispered handing me a throat poking spoon
"Slowly we'll evaporate;
Till nothing is there"

We threw bread towards passing trains
Swallowing pills that claimed beautification
And wondered what a dead bird might look like undressed and featherless

There’s truth in gusts of sleep,
while I struggle in the
security of windbreaking
as heaven opens up to scream.

I wrote a poem off one of the prompts, but was too late. :( Thank you for the inspiration though!
